moreResolved Question: Which art galleries in London would you suggest to visit?
Am starting A level art in September and we have been advised to go to art galleries to think about what the art means. Could you suggest which galleries to go to and why I should go to them?
Am also very interested in going to the Tate Modern and would like to know how long it takes to go round the galleries?
moreResolved Question: Am I missing something here?
Or do I just not get great art?
London's Tate Britain art gallery has paid £30 000 for a ''conceptual'' till receipt showing artist Ceal Floyer's grocery shopping.
The till receipt includes such wonders as boil-in-the-bag rice and toilet paper.
This is-according to the artist-a ''modern still life where objects are to be imagined rather than shown''
Am I missing a trick?
I have dozens of old till receipts in my handbag--Should I be sending them away to the Tate and awaiting my cheque?
Would also like to point out that this gallery receives both lottery and government funding !!!
I just dont get it !!!Thanks Shambo -lololHelen--But rubbish IS ART!! You surely cannot have forgotten Tracey Emin's 'Grubby bed and used condom exhibition' !!.
If the till receipt thing does not work out for me I will be holding an exhibition entitled '' A 10 year olds bedroom--Untidy room or untidy mind''!!!
(May have to look to Corneilius for advice on the title but will send you a VIP invite !!)Thanks for posting Corneilius--I like Banksy as well-hadnt seen those pics!
And Conway--I have a spare tin of 'Apple White''--could post it for your picture if you run short lol !!

moreResolved Question: Banksy; as the UK is 'one nation under CCTV', why hasn't the Bristolian image-maker been brought to book yet?
...by the 'we'll get ya' attitude of our guardians yet, as well as certain squealers like Peter Gibson (Keep Britain Tidy), Tower Hamlets Council etc. in London and others who would rather see 'real artists' in Whitworth Art Gallery, Victoria & Albert or the Walker Art Gallery than someone who tickles the braincells of the alleged 'art illiterates'? The Grauniad, Indy and other newspapers...including the ones who apparently hate such 'graffiti' but will cover their pages with Banksy doodlings to keep up - and of course make more money in sales cannot get enough of the latest messages via art..
Just wondering...is there only one 'Banksy', or a trio of them, working in Europe, America and the Middle East at the same time to throw off the scent. Is he, indeed a 'she'. Could he/she be a member of Parliament who knows how to sweet-talk the authorities, thus not getting his/her collar felt - or a Brit. West Indian who did his O level in art and...well - perhaps not the latter, as he would have been caught long before now. Wondering why 'Banksy' hasn't been dragged up in front of a courtroom after all this time? Not that I want to see it happen - I'm sure many don't, but being in a part of the world that is - er - 'tough on the causes of crime', - he/she/they (by the name of 'Banksy') find it laughingly easy to skip away from PC99....Was discussing his current showing in a gallery in his home city last night, and laughed my nuts off at someone saying he/she is the 'Eminem of art...' - id est; taking on a wee bit of black urban strokes here and there...and making his bank manager smile.

moreResolved Question: Have you ever wondered why people can spend several minutes admiring a single painting inside a museum yet..?
..walk past similar paintings in restaurants, hotels or peoples homes everyday without much more than a glance?
I mean, of course, many of the work of museum-featured artists are incredibly talented and I have the up most respect for them. But,
the other day my friend dragged me along to the National Art Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London and I was more mesmerised by the
the people and their silence as they concentratingly gazed at these paintings, some even appeared to not move for several seconds.
And in contrast, I've walked through towns abroad in several continents and seen paintings that to me appear just as lovely as some of the museum-featured ones, but little people stop or find much interest in them.
Thoughts please?
Kind Regards,
Charlotte.Derke N: You've humoured me, be rest assured!Very impressed with every one of your answers!

STREETLIFE
Graffiti is this body's autograph:
A scrawl of horns and sleazy angels too;
A faded echo of an epitaph,
Ten minutes' worth forgettable tattoo.
The beat of far too many unknown feet
Has beaten out the life of pavement art.
Now the faceghosts of strangers haunt the street:
Past masters blanched as bone don't stir the heart.
No second coming here, no chance to be
Born once again through art's eternal grace.
This dowdy thoroughfare will never see
God-galleries of marble in its place.
Ethereal colours bloom and grow in vain,
Emptied by the indifference of rain.

Art gallery in Wales is a hole in the wall.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_east/8026878.stm
Am I the only one who is lost when it comes to what constitutes art these days or, art displays and galleries?
What happened to proper art?Studs, you have summed up my thoughts exactly. There seems to be no thought or talent/ability involved in art these days and no encouragement to produce something of beauty or thought provoking. These day a sh!t down a toilet can get rave reviews from critics and someone would spend a fortune to buy it. Surely a hole in a wall just encourages such ridiculous objects of so called art and as for irony, reclass it as taking the p!ss. But, then again I suppose it could be suggested as being the fault of people who are gullible enough to consider it as art.To those who are saying it's not art but a place to display art. I strongly suspect that it is being touted as art in that the thoughts of the people who started this are thinking it is an artistic way of displaying art therefore making it art in itself. Also, some idiot will buy the hole and display it pointing out an empty space and brag about the gallery they have bought.By the way had a thought. I am going for a night out in Cardiff tomorrow. If caught short, I will take a pee in it then sell for a fortune as art. What a p!ss take that will be on the art world!Lol Helen. Found that out about 20 years ago when caught peeing on the wall of our local barclays Bank. Fair play they've got their revenge now, Barclays have p1ssed on all of us Lol.

We are lucky in the UK as we have some of the world's greatest galleries and museums in London, Birmingham and Machester - and they are all free! I am planning a trip to the USA and have to allow quite a few dollars to visit museums and galleries. I know that the Legion of Honour is $10 entry, do they also charge for parking?
